Onward and Upward

What a fascinating discussion on Pentecostals and ecology - thankyou Shane and all our commenters :) It will be interesting to see how the paper is received when Dr Clifton delivers it in Korea next week.

While we will be continuing to look at ways we can implement ecotheology at SCC, the blog is moving onward and upward. Mark Hutchinson is in Korea at the moment, so we now have the privilege of interacting with the ideas of Dr Jacqui Grey on Pentecostals and Princess theology. Stay tuned for some royal-class discussion!!

Rules of Engagement

Before we go public, i thought it might be worthwhile to further think through our rules of engagement.  In this process, i am suggesting we draw on the logic of "the man" mark hutchinson, in his discussion of academic freedom set out in the APS Journal (http://aps.webjournals.org/articles/1/03/2006/6661.htm?id={CEAD2A84-9C30-458F-BC0D-33A192544C90})

To quote him directly

Pentecostals will need to be able to demonstrate proper protections for academic freedom, while at the same time realizing the institutional and cultural costs of entrenching an individualist interpretation in tenure. We cannot afford to have ‘academic freedom’ as a ‘transcendent value’ if it functionally displaces our real, core, transcendent values and encourages selfishness and subservience. Some form of mutual obligation, entrenched in real relationships, would be a preferable way of running a Christian institution. Whether it is workable in terms of institutional risk reduction is the key question.

Welcome

Welcome to the SCC faculty blog.  I though we might start with a discussion of our rules of engagement.  Our purpose is to stimulate discussion about topics of interest arising in the Pentecostal / charismatic world and, in particular, to get interdisciplinary discussion going between Southern Cross College faculty, students, and the world beyond.

My idea to facilitate discussion was to allocate a member of faculty to lead the blog for a week (or so).  This person would select a topic arising from their own research or teaching, and post a series of blogs, to which others are encouraged to respond.

I suggest that we commence with posts of around anywhere between 300 to 1000 words.  If you have more to say, break it up into a few posts.

Anyway - dont just read this post.  Give me your comments, suggestions, fears etc.  Once we have established our grandrules, set up the look and feel of the blog, we shall start our discussion
